In spite of recent rumours of a new shortage of nurses, Nursing Times has claimed that nursing vacancies have fallen by nearly a third since last summer.
Figures from the NHS Jobs website apparently show 2,306 posts advertised at the beginning of August 2009, but only 1,552 nine months later.
The main decrease has been in jobs of salary levels between £20 and £30k prompting some claims that more nursing functions are being taken on by Healthcare Assistants.
The news seems to gainsay any hope that the Health Service may be spared some of the ferocity of cuts scheduled for the public sector in general.
